How we build a year
Original Lore turns a birth year and a place into a short, personal reel of the years that made you. Everything in it is rebuilt from the real record — not a vibe, not a guess. This is how.
what a year actually holds
Every year page is assembled from the things that were genuinely around you: the song that was inescapable, the five-track summer tape underneath it, the films you queued for and the shows you binged, what a gallon of gas or a stamp cost, the gadgets that had just landed, the snacks and drinks everyone had, the headlines, and the phrases people actually said. Real, specific, and dated — because the specific is what makes it yours instead of a decade’s.
why the year you were fifteen
The music you hear roughly between ages twelve and twenty-two bonds permanently to who you are — psychologists call it the “reminiscence bump.” It’s the most reliable, most universal nostalgia trigger there is. So we anchor on the year you were about fifteen and pull the soundtrack from the dense window around it. That’s why a birth year is all we need to find the summer that still lives in you.

how each year is sourced
We build country by country, year by year. Music comes from the year-end charts of that country; films and television from box-office and broadcast records; prices, wages and everyday costs from period records; and the gadgets, snacks, headlines and slang from contemporaneous sources. Canada’s year is genuinely Canadian — its own charts, box office and everyday life, not a translated version of America’s. That local accuracy is the whole point, and the hardest part.
honest about the gaps
Where we don’t yet have deep local data for a country or a year, we show less rather than invent more — a page never pads itself with filler. Countries we haven’t built to our bar yet are marked “coming soon” instead of faked. A wrong detail breaks the spell, so we’d rather leave a gap than paper over one.

Every image on these pages is public-domain, Creative-Commons, or AI-generated, and each one carries its credit and licence in plain sight. Song, film and show titles and artists are facts, and we show them as text — but we never host, embed, or play a copyrighted recording or trailer on these pages. The real music lives in your own player; here it’s the memory, written down.
